Book Giveaway: 8 - Bit Christmas

Since July 2010, TNBBC has been bringing authors and readers together every month to get behind the book! This unique experience wouldn't be possible without the generous donations of the authors and publishers involved.

It's the first of the month and you know what that means.
It's time to bring you July's Author/Reader Discussion book!

Awwww Yeaaaah! We're celebrating Christmas in July, 80's style!!

We will be reading and discussing 8 Bit - Christmas
with author Kevin Jakubowski

The author has generously agreed to give away up to 15 copies of his book...
Print (for US residents only) and digital formats PDF or MOBI (open internationally)

Here is the Goodreads description to whet your appetite:

It's 1980-something and all nine-year-old Jake Doyle wants for Christmas is a Nintendo Entertainment System. No Jose Conseco rookie card, no GI Joe hovercraft, no Teddy friggin' Ruxpin--just Nintendo. But when a hyperactive Shih Tzu is accidentally crushed to death by a forty-two-inch television set and every parent in town blames Nintendo, it's up to Jake to take matters into his own hands. The result is a Christmas quest of Super Mario Bros. proportions, filled with flaming wreaths, speeding minivans, lost retainers, fake Santas, hot teachers, snotty sisters, "Super Bowl Shuffles" and one very naked Cabbage Patch Kid. Told from a nostalgic adult perspective, 8-Bit Christmas is a hilarious and heartfelt look back at the kid pop culture of the 1980s.

Oh my gosh! You've sooo got to read that, right?

This giveaway will run through June 8th.

  1. Thank you so much for offering this giveaway.

    1. I would like to receive a copy of this book because ... it sounds awesome! I'm also an avid game player who grew up in the 80s. Recently I've been reliving a bit of my childhood playing Mario Kart 8. The book sounds like it will be a fun read -- just the thing to provide a nice break from my summer school reading (The Federal Rules of Evidence). I'd prefer to receive a paper copy. I live in California.

    2. I agree to participate in the group read book discussion. I promise to think of questions, too!

    3. I can be contacted via email at heather [dot] varanini [at] gmail [dot] com.

    Thanks again!

  2. The description speaks to me on a deep level. It speaks of the kind of need one feels before you learn that such a need becomes a responsibility - it speaks of the time before I was more than a walking, breathing id-monster that didn't care what it cost, but knew only that the NES was far, far better than Simon and I NEEDED it. These days we watch VH1 and ride that nostalgia like so many pow-pow-Power Wheels. Without the amusing commentary of B-list celebrities, I mostly remember bright colors, loud noises, and the friendship of My Buddy. However, I do remember that I wanted that NES so bad I would've traded my Pogo Balls for it. I did get one eventually. Will Jake? I want to find out. I'd participate in the discussion, and would prefer a dead tree copy, but could manage with an epub. I can be reached at djnickpage -at- gmail -dot- com. Good luck everyone!

  3. I'm so looking forward to reading this book! It's been on my TBR list and it sounds like a retro hoot!
I'd love to be one of the ones to receive a copy of the book. If I'm one of the lucky ones, I'll definitely participate in the conversations about it. My (now) husband worked in the toy department of a department store when Teddy Ruxpin took the toy world by storm. I was one department over from Toys (Gift Wrap) and had to wrap more Nintendos, Teddys and Cabbage Patch Kids than I care to even talk about. I'm still deeply scarred from that Christmas. Could this book be the newer, hipper "A Christmas Story?"? I'm thinking maybe. Would love to read it to find out!

    Thanks for the opportunity.

  4. 1. I would like to win a copy of this book. I am definitely a kid of the 80's. My 8-bit NES is hooked up and ready to go...I will take on all comers in Super Mario Brothers 1 thru 3. For that matter, I will challenge you to 16-bit Super Nintendo Mario Kart too...the original. I would prefer a print (paper) copy of the book. (Old school all of the way.) I live just outside of East Lansing, Michigan...Go Spartans!

    2. I agree to participate in the group book discussion July 21st through July 27th.
