Book Giveaway: The Bee-Loud Glade

I am especially thrilled to be able to offer following giveaway !

Steve Himmer's novel The Bee Loud Glade will be featured in
October as part of TNBBC's Author/Reader discussion

In order to stimulate discussion,
we have 5 books to give away for US residents
and 2 books to give away Internationally!!

Here is the book description as it appears on Goodreads:
When Finch, a recently fired marketer of plastic plants, takes a vow of silence to live as a hermit on an eccentric billionaire's estate, he finds that his attempt to contemplate nature and deeper truths is foiled by his noisy inner thoughts and his new employer's booming demands.

The contest will run through September 20th.

Here's how to enter:

1 - Comment here stating that you would like to receive a copy of the book, and tell us what you would consider taking a 7 year vow of silence for.

2 - Pleas tell us if you are a resident of the US, or if you are international (In this case, Canada is considered international) and leave me a way to contact you.

*If your comment is missing any of this information, it will be considered ineligible.

3- Agree to participate in a group read book discussion that will run during the month of October over at TNBBC on Goodreads. Steve Himmer has agreed to participate in the discussion and will be available to answer any questions you may have for him.

  1. I actually think everyone I know would love to see me take a 7 minute vow of silence. That would be a record for me.

I would like to take silent time to see if I eventually stop talking to myself.

  2. I am a resident of the U.S. and I would love to receive a copy of the book to read and discuss. It would take a lot for me to take a seven year vow of silence. I love to talk. Maybe if a loved one's life depended on it, and I knew absolutely that it would save them to be silent for seven years. That is the kind of dire situation that would be required to make me shut up for that long. And then, would I even want to talk anymore after that long being quiet?

Hi, I am from Canada, I would like to receive a copy of the book.
I would take a vow of silence for 7 years is it would stop bullying, bullying of children and bullying in the work place. Far to many people/children have taken their lives as a result, my youngest son had to go through a good friend of his committed sucide and it came out he was being bullied. It was hard on my son and me as well as the whole school, I cant even fathom his family.

  5. Hello, I am a U.S. resident and I would like to receive a copy of the book.

In the real world, taking a vow of silence is too passive to accomplish anything truly substantial. However, in a work of fiction, the results could make for an interesting read. It is too much of a sacrifice for me to make, unless the results could be guaranteed! If they could be, I would do it for permanent world peace.

  7. Hello, I am from the US and would love to read The Bee Loud Glade. I would enjoy discussing this book especially if the author would be available to answer whatever questions I have after reading this book. It would be very difficult for me to take a vow of silence but I would attempt it if it involved saving someone's life especially one of my children. I wonder what my voice would sound like after 7 years of not using it!

  8. Hello, I am from the US and I would welcome a Walden Lake existence complete with a seven-year vow of silence as long as my laptop and my longing-to-be-read books accompany me...as well as the usual bare necessities required for survival.

  9. I would love to win a copy of this to give to my granddaughter as Sept. 20th is her birthday and she loves reading more than anything. She is in honor classes and AVID classes. She is a 9th grader who needs more and more advance books to read. This might be a good book for her to get for her birthday. Thanks

  13. I am in Canada so I guess that makes me "international" which is always confusing to me.

I would take a vow of silence if it would end the abuse of women from Nepal who are being tricked into becoming trapped slave workers. Slavery is alive and flourishing today and it is a sad commentary on our species. In fact, I would take a vow of silence for life if would end this horrifying practice.

    thanks, marie

  14. I am a US resident who would love to read and discuss the book! What would I take a 7 year vow of silence for? I think I would take the vow if it would do something good for someone I love, like give my parents better health. It would be worth it to see them spend their money on travel instead of medication.

  15. Hi, I am a US resident and I would love to receive a copy of the book and participate in the book discussion. At first blush the vow doesn't intimidate me, but after a little thought I realize it would probably take a fairly radical lifestyle change to enact -career, boyfriend, paying bills, ordering coffee, etc. I would do it if it would somehow help the greater good, like keeping quiet about an amazing drug still in trial, or protecting someone's identity. I would also consider taking a vow if I believed there was something on the other side- greater awareness or understanding, unlocking some of the mysteries of the mind, etc.
    Thank you!

  17. Hi, I am from the U.S. and would take a 7-year vow of silence in exchange for ridding the world of violence, saving the life of loved ones, or some other good reason that will occur to me only after I post this! Plus I probably have family members who would pay you to have my take this vow! I am intrigued by this book and would love to read and discuss it.

  18. I would love to receive a copy of The Bee-Loud Glade--it sounds very intriguing.

I find it easy to keep to myself and my inner thoughts. I would certainly take a 7-year vow of silence to read my personal library of to-be-read books (over 1000!), thought perhaps it would take a bit longer...? Maybe not--I could crank out a book every other day and use the days in between for contemplation. I would also gladly take a 7-year vow of silence if I were offered an unlimited, lifetime guaranteed gift card to my favorite bookstore, though I can think of no reason why that would be offered in return for my silence. =)

I am a U.S. citizen from the grand state of Texas.

  19. Hello! I am from the US. I am very interested in reading this book and would most certainly participate in the goodreads discussion.

I would take a 7 year vow silence if it was necessary to protect my son or other loved ones. I would most likely take the vow to protect or save the life of any child.

(I wonder if I would be able to text or facebook chat, lol)

Me take a 7 year silence vow? Well I could probably find a wife quicker if i didnt speak and keep a job, but seven years is alot. Hmm for a million dollars I would, selfish? Yes, but I got tons of bills to pay. ha

  22. I live in the US. Like most people who are married, have children, a job, involved in community activities and social things which make our life rich, a vow of silence for 7 years would = great hardship. IF I could be guaranteed to live to 100 years of age with my husband and children still alive and in good health, plus my health and mental status well, then I would sign up for the deal.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I would love to win a copy of the book and discuss it on goodreads (one of my favorite websites ever). I don't know if I could ever really do a vow of silence! But if it would somehow help my family live without having to worry about financial stress for the rest of their lives, I would do it.

    I live in Denver.

  24. Hi Lori,
I'm in the UK, so am international (although to me you're the one who's international, but I suppose that's tangential). I would like to receive the book. To be honest the idea of a seven-year vow of silence actually appeals to me, but not as a rich man's pet project. It's interesting to me that so many of these answers are to do with saving people, world peace, etc., rather than money as with Finch. I think altruism is a huge motivation for all of us, despite the attempts to make us believe we are all selfish and materialistic, and I believe the only reason we don't do more is because we don't think it would have any effect. If I knew for sure that taking a seven-year vow of silence would save a life, end poverty, create world peace, stop global warming or anything else worthwhile, I'd do it. I'd do a lot more than that besides. I think it's the feeling of powerlessness that holds me back from doing more. Very interesting competition!

  25. Hi! I'm from the US and I would love to receive this book and participate in a discussion about it with other goodreads members and the author.

A 7 year vow of silence would probably be very difficult for me. You'd probably need to wire my jaw shut or something. Whenever I participate in Day of Silence, I usually manage to stay quiet for the whole day, but it's so loud in my head. I'm not sure I'd be able to deal with that for 7 years. As others said, if it was for a really good cause and if there was a guarantee that my silence would bring about change, I would certainly try my best.

and a reasonably early retirement for myself. Given the crapper our economy right now, neither seems likely.

Most people would love it if I took a 7 yr vow of silence --if it were indeed possible for me to shut up that long I would do it and write the great Canadian novel. I would be totally frigging nuts and be writing a lot of very sarcastic notes.

As for the vow of silence, I said this morning to my boss that I need to join a baseball research monastery, complete with vow of silence. Instead of engaging in prayer and worship like a typical monastery, I'd research the grand old game of baseball.

If I were to take a seven year vow of silence, for baseball research or otherwise, it would be for myself. No talking to people and none talking to me. It would be peaceful. I sure would miss singing, though.

  31. I would love to read and discuss this book! The premise of the book sounds very interesting.

I would take a 7 year vow of silence if it would protect my family or guarantee world peace. 7 years is a long time and it would have to be something earth changing in my life to be able to commit to something like that. I wonder though if 7 years of not hearing your own voice, not engaging in conversations, would change your inner monologue or your sense of self.

I am a US resident and would be happy to participate in a group discussion if I win a copy of the book.

It is hard for me to imagining taking a 7 year vow of silence with 2 children! Way too much yelling needed! It would have to be a very good deal but I think it would really help you to learn more about yourself. I wonder also if you can use sign language as an alternative! I guess it would depend on how many people you deal with on a daily basis but I think it would be hard if you had no means of communication. This book sounds like a great discussion starter!

  36. Hey there, I live in Australia and would love to take part in this; and the group discussion. Now, the 7 year vow of silence would be used to become an observer to the world, learn to hold my peace (even when I don't wish to) and watch goes on around me and really tick off people who are trying to get me to break my vow of silence. And also, I could brush up on my sign language too and get to become more fluent in it(yes, I learnt it when I was young, and haven't used it in years; so here's my chance!).

  48. Since I struggle with inner thoughts during my daily meditation, the idea of a seven year silence is most intriguing, as is silence in general - I would love to win a copy of The Bee-Loud Glade. In addition to the idea of silence in an of itself, I'm now going to sound a bit like a contestant for Ms America since I definitely live in the U.S... I'd consider a vow of silence for seven years to end world hunger, which I believe would go a long way toward ending world conflict and creating peace...

In short, I'd love to win a copy of a most intriguing book... participate in the coming discussion...live in the U.S... and would consider my own vow of silence for the requisite number of years to end world hunger.

Okay so for me to take a 7 year vow of silence I would have to have to know that my kids would be happy and successful in their lives. Not meaning for them to never have any trials or issues per se, for how could they learn. I just want for them to be happy and to have their dreams come true. Be what they want to be do what they want to do, no matter what it is. If they want to be a doctor or a street performer, I do not care as long as they do what they want to do. And for my husband to be happy with himself, not feel like he is a disappointment to anyone. Thats what it would take for me to take a 7 year vow to silence. Oh and maybe a 1 MILLION dollars. HAHA, I kid! Just happiness and wellness for my family.
